Couple in Wuhan detained for hand-making 800 bottles of fake Moutai

Police have detained a couple who made over 800 bottles of adulterated Chinese baijiu (white spirit) and selling it in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei Province.

The police estimated that these more than 800 bottles of fake liquor are worth about 2 million yuan ($308,000) in total, according to Kankan News.

The police said that the two suspects were only responsible for producing the fake liquor, and customers would reach to them to place orders. The liquor was being sold at the price of authentic one, the report noted.

The couple and three other suspects who were involved in the selling chain are now under detention, and the case is still under investigation.

The report said that the couple normally received orders to make adulterated well-known Chinese baijiu bands such as Moutai and Wuliangye.

A Chinese ecommerce platform shows that the price of 500 milliliters of Moutai is around 2,599 ($400) yuan, and a bottle of Wuliangye with equal volume sells at 1,299 yuan.

This is not the first time police have discovered a fake baijiu chain in August. On August 23, six suspects were captured in Xuzhou, East China's Jiangsu Province, for making over 100 boxes of fake Chinese baijiu, worth 800,000 yuan ($123,000).
